How to avoid buying maternity clothes during pregnancy – Vogue Australia (blog)

Ah, pregnancy. I (honestly) loved every min of it except for the bit where my physique form changed every couple of mins and my Louboutins stopped fitting me.

As I mourned the loss of my Pigalles for the remainder of my pregnancy (apparently your belly isn’t the just thing that swells once you’re expecting – cute!) I was determined to hang onto my design – and the remainder of the points I currently had in my wardrobe – for as long as I could throughout those nine months.

So exactly how did I make my existing wardrobe job once I was growing and expanding while expecting?

Extend the life of pre-pregnancy clothes
Firstly, a little improvisation along with points I currently owned went a long means in ensuring I didn’t spend a fortune on maternity clothes I’d just put on for a couple of months. Layering belly bands under/over my clothes, looping hair elastics through the buttonhole of my jeans, and wearing a slim belt above and listed here my bump to lend form to my a lot more oversized pieces, were simply a couple of methods I earned my pre-pregnancy clothes job for my bump.

Round up the core pieces
Blazers, coats and sleeveless jackets: generally anything that doesn’t require buttoning up offered me actually well from the Very first trimester to the third. The slimming effect is likewise undeniable (especially blazers that skim the hip or trench coats that graze the calf). I located I never ever grew from my outerwear, which helped me hang onto some semblance of my own design throughout those nine months.

I after that aside from dresses that accommodated my bump. This ruled out the majority of points along with a zip (unless it was super stretchy) and anything that had a seamed waist. I lived in my Bassike organic cotton items (comfortable, stretchy and long – the just points that matter once you’re pregnant) and my Cecile Copenhagen trapeze-design pieces on days once a substantial t-shirt and leggings-as-pants couldn’t reduce it.

Create a ‘pregnancy capsule wardrobe’
Next step – dedicating a brand-new space in my closet for clothes that still fit. That way, I could notice at a glance just what choices were offered free of dividing in hormonal tears due to the fact that my Acne jeans no longer zipped up (pregnant ladies, you understand just what I’m talking about). I re-organised my closet at about week 14 of my pregnancy, after that continually added and subtracted from my ‘pregnancy capsule wardrobe’ based on just what still match (and just what no longer did).

The remainder of my ‘maternity’ wardrobe consisted of separates that were long, loose, and stretchy. This included oversized knits over extend midi skirts, silk button-down shirts over leggings, and longline sleeveless blazers used over trousers (that sometimes didn’t zip all of the means up – hey, so long as your top is long, everyone will certainly be none the wiser!).

‘Shop’ from your very own closet
Prior to I ran out and invested a million dollars at Seed and Witchery in a dimension 16, I dusted off all of those big, old clothes from the dark depths of my wardrobe that I’d forgotten about.

Remember that Tools silk shirt you bought two dimensions also big due to the fact that it was 70% off? Or the dress you nabbed at the Ellery sample sale that’s slightly also ‘voluminous’ (however you swore you’d make it work, anyway)? Now’s the moment to dig that stuff out! I located they were absolutely suitable for the growing bump, and the whole procedure felt enjoy I had gone on a shopping spree free of having invested a cent.
