It’s a pleasure today for us to welcome a rarity to Huge Time Small-Time Dicks: a woman legislator, that said something every bit as fucked as the men we typically feature in this room come up with. 3 cheers for equality and for Tila Hubrecht, a Missouri say representative that suggested that pregnancy might be a God-offered “silver lining” of a rape. Days later, she isn’t apologizing for her comments. Of path not. Why would certainly she? Why would certainly any kind of of us ever re-believe the godawful points we say?
Hubrecht, a Republican from Dexter, made the comment earlier this week throughout a debate over a hideous “personhood” amendment that passed the Missouri House yesterday. The amendment, enjoy all of personhood amendments, would certainly offer fetuses residing inside individuals in Missouri complete legal rights. The say constitution currently says it protects “the ideal to life”; this measure will certainly ask voters to approve the addition of yet another clause, one protecting “unborn human kids at every phase of biological development.” The bill includes no exception for rape or incest.
These debates are constantly a time for anti-abortion politicians to claim the a lot of ridiculous points they can easily believe up regarding just what abortion is like. Rep. Mike Moon went for an old standby, likening it to the Holocaust: “The silence of those that hope to protect the unborn is much like the silence of Germans that stood by and allowed Jewish individuals to be slaughtered by the Nazis.”
And Hubrecht defended banning abortion in also instances of rape (the bill includes no exceptions for rape or incest). “Occasionally poor points happen,” she said. “However Occasionally God can easily offer us a silver lining through the birth of a child.”
On Thursday, according to the Missouri Times, Hubrecht defended the comments along with a confused statement regarding the “American justice system”:
Hubrecht responded to the backlash Thursday early morning at a press conference along with Moon, not rescinding her comments However urging that she merely preferred to defend the “innocent.”
“I do not believe in America it is ideal to punish innocent individuals for somebody else’s crime; that is not our unit of justice,” she said. “The infant did not anything wrong, the woman did not anything wrong. The man that raped the woman is the one that performed [sic] something wrong and need to be punished.”
In the time-honored tradition of lately embarrassed politicians, Hubrecht likewise appears to be scrubbing negative comments from her Facebook page; we’ve enjoyed a couple of appear then disappear in the moment it took to write this post.
The personhood bill gradually passed 110-37. It’ll make its means to the Senate next, and ultimately, if the voters approve it, to a court of law to be struck down.
